Managing Partners Diversity Collaborative Agreement

Miller Johnson is a founding member of the Managing Partners Diversity Collaborative Agreement, a formal commitment between Grand Rapids law firms and the Grand Rapids Bar Association to work together to promote and achieve greater diversity, equity and inclusion in the West Michigan legal community through education, hiring, retention and promotion.

The participating members in the Agreement have developed an Action Plan to address three initial challenges:

  • Increasing the number of attorneys of color
  • Improving the retention of both female attorneys and attorneys of color
  • Expanding the pipeline of persons of color entering law school and the profession

Leadership Council on Legal Diversity

Formed in 2009, the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD) is made up of the general counsels of the nation’s preeminent corporations and of the managing partners of the nation’s leading law firms. Miller Johnson is actively participating in the LCLD Fellows Program and the 1L LCLD Scholars Program as part of our commitment to make the profession increasingly open to talented individuals of all backgrounds. To learn more about the LCLD, visit www.lcldnet.org.

Miller Johnson has signed on to the LCLD Leaders at the Front Diversity Initiative. Leaders at the Front is an initiative designed to dismantle systemic barriers preventing underrepresented attorneys from achieving the highest levels of leadership within law firms and corporate legal departments.  Rich Sorota, CEO at Miller Johnson is the latest firm leader to sign on to this initiative.

For 2022, Aimee Jachym is Miller Johnson’s designee in the Fellows Program – an ambitious, highly structured training program designed to build relationships and leadership skills in high-potential attorneys from diverse backgrounds. Ms. Jachym follows in the footsteps of Amy Murphy (2021), Shoran Reid Williams (2020), Brittany Harden (2019),  Dustin Jackson (2018), Cathy Tracey (2017), Rebecca Strauss (2015), Raj Malviya (2014), Sarah Willey (2013), and Bob Wolford (2011).

Ms. Alise Hildreth is Miller Johnson’s designee in the LCLD Pathfinders Program – designed for diverse, high-potential, early-career attorneys. Ms. Hildreth continues the firm’s involvement following Caitlin Farrell (2021), Anne Marie Carson (2020), Loic Dimithe (2019), and Kevin Battle (2018).

Miller Johnson Michigan Diversity Scholarship

To increase the diversity of the legal profession in Michigan, Miller Johnson has, since 2008, partnered with the Grand Rapids Community Foundation to administer the Miller Johnson Michigan Diversity Scholarship.  This scholarship is awarded annually to a student of color accepted to or presently attending an accredited law school within the United States who either has permanent residence in Michigan or attends a Michigan law school.  One $5,000 scholarship is awarded each year.  More details about the scholarship can be found here (link: https://www.grfoundation.org/apply-for-scholarships/additional-scholarships).

Actions for Change

Miller Johnson has decided that we must engage and be leaders in this fight. Through our commitment to foster an environment to help us identify the biases we each hold and to move beyond them; in our hiring, retention and promotion practices; in how we spend our dollars as a firm; and how we donate our time and legal services, we will show we are committed to being the change we want to see.
