Legal Administrative Assistant – Grand Rapids Office

Miller Johnson is seeking an experienced full-time Legal Administrative Assistant for our downtown Grand Rapids office.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinating administrative and legal practice tasks and projects for attorneys
  • Calendaring and coordinating meetings, appointments, deadlines, tasks, and conference calls
  • Preparing new client intake materials; opening new client matters; billing activities
  • Client interaction by phone, email and in person
  • Preparing, editing, proofreading, and assembling legal documents and correspondence
  • Preparing and filing court documents including electronically through Electronic Case Files (ECF) as needed

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 2 years administrative experience
  • Advanced knowledge and proficiency in MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
  • Corporate and Litigation skills preferred
  • Excellent grammar and communication skills
  • Knowledge of court and agency processes and procedures
  • Exceptional client service, discretion, and judgment to ensure client confidentiality

Probate and Estate Planning Paralegal – Kalamazoo Office

Miller Johnson is seeking an experienced full-time Paralegal to join our probate and estate planning practice group in our Kalamazoo office.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Preparation of documents including: will summaries, petitions for probate, orders admitting wills to probate, letters of authority, affidavits, petitions for appointment of guardian and conservator, estate inventories, creditors’ claims, and petitions for final account and distribution.
  • Direct communication with clients, accountants, investment advisors and the IRS, as needed, to assist with estate and trust settlements.
  • Estate administration including drafting initial probate court pleadings for estates, guardianships, and conservatorships; inventories and accountings for same.
  • Management of docket dates and cases; preparation of real estate documents (Fiduciary deeds, PTA, PRE Rescission).
  • Trust administration and drafting of the required statutory documents.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or related field and/or certification from an accredited paralegal program
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in probate and trust administration
  • Advanced knowledge of probate court rules and procedures, laws, and regulations relating to probate and trust administration
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Office (Outlook, Word, Visio, Excel) and PDF creation
  • Concise and effective written and verbal communication
  • Exceptional client service skills, discretion, and judgment to ensure client confidentiality
  • Proactive and detail-oriented with strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Self-motivated professional with the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to think creatively to identify and implement proactive solutions

Trusts and Estates Attorney: Private Client Practice Group – Grand Rapids Office

Miller Johnson has an immediate opening for an associate attorney in its Private Client Practice Group. Miller Johnson’s Private Client Practice Group is one of the largest in Michigan, consisting of 11 attorneys, four of whom are ACTEC Fellows, along with five experienced paralegals. While based in the firm’s downtown Grand Rapids office, some travel to the firm’s Kalamazoo office will be required.  Candidates applying should have at least 3 -5 years of practice experience working in all areas of estate and tax planning for individuals and organizations, business succession, and probate and trust administration. The candidate should have a good understanding of transfer tax, fiduciary income tax, and tax-exempt organization rules, and preferably hold tax credentials (CPA, MST, or LL.M in Tax).  Excellent academic credentials and exceptional writing and communication skills are required.

The attorney position will work in all areas of employee benefits and executive compensation, including retirement benefits and health and welfare benefits.
