Remote I-9 Verification: What Employers Should Know – Webinar Recording
In July 2023, the USCIS introduced a new Form I-9, along with a new procedure for remotely verifying I-9 documents. As of August 1, 2023, employers who participate in E-Verify and are in “good standing” have the option of examining Form I-9 documents during a video conference instead of in person.
The remote verification procedure requires a qualified employer to do all of the following within three business days of an employee’s start date:
- Examine all Form I-9 documents (including the front and back of any double-sided documents) to ensure that the documentation “reasonably appears to be genuine.”
- Conduct a live video interaction with the employee to verify that the documentation “reasonably appears to be genuine and related to the individual.”
- Check a box on Form I-9 indicating that an alternative procedure was used to examine I-9 documentation
- Retain clear and legible copies of documentation
On Wednesday, March 13, Immigration attorney Kevin Battle, presented the “Remote I-9 Verification: What Employers Should Know” webinar. You can watch the recording here:
