Miller Johnson Hosts Legal Aid of West Michigan for Lunch & Learn

Earlier this week Noah Joseph, Pro Bono Supervising Attorney with Legal Aid of Western Michigan (LAWM), presented during a lunch & learn for Miller Johnson team members. Melissa Neckers, member of the MJ Action Committee, introduced Noah and spoke about MJ Action and the continuing pro bono activities of the firm.

During the lunch Noah walked over 50 team members, who attended in person and via Zoom from all three offices, through the expungement process, the types of expungements here in Michigan, and the steps those desiring an expungement must take.  He also gave information on how people can get involved in LAWM’s mission of protecting rights, challenging injustice, and fighting poverty through free legal advocacy for people and families.

Additionally, Miller Johnson attorneys Alex Page and Richard Cherry also spoke about their experiences with expungements and helping those through the process.  Alex spoke of her background with expungement cases, working with legal aid organizations and pro bono work in general.  Richard spoke on his experience with partnering with LAWM on an expungement for a specific client and that client’s path to getting their record expunged.

They help when civil (non-criminal) legal problems threaten their clients’ basic living needs, like food-security and income-security, housing, healthcare access, and safety from domestic violence. MJ Action (www.mjaction.law) formerly known as Project Giveback, is a pro bono and community service initiative started in February 2021 that provides Miller Johnson attorneys and team members the opportunity to provide support to the community through legal services and volunteerism.
