Miller Johnson Holiday Contributions to Benefit Children-Focused Nonprofits on Behalf of Firm’s Clients

Miller Johnson is marking 2021’s ‘Giving Tuesday’ by making customary annual holiday contributions on behalf of its clients to three statewide charitable organizations.

“Our clients have told us they appreciate the work we do on their behalf in the communities we serve” said David Buday and Bob Wolford, Managing Members of Miller Johnson. “This year our firm is honoring our widespread client base by contributing on their behalf to organizations and programs we know are making a difference in our home state of Michigan. These organizations profoundly help children and vulnerable adults with services when needed most. We must support those in need in every way possible.”

In 2021, Miller Johnson is pleased to make donations to the following organizations:

Children’s Advocacy Center of Kent County

The Children’s Advocacy Center of Kent County (the Center) has led the local effort to recognize, report and reduce child sexual abuse since 1993. Along the way, they’ve helped thousands of children and families achieve healing and justice with services being provided at no cost.

The Children’s Advocacy Center provides a safe space where children can receive all the services they may need after being sexually abused. The Center also goes out into the community to empower children and adults to recognize, report and prevent sexual abuse.

All of the Center’s services are delivered free of charge to families, thanks to the generous support of the community and the guidance of a visionary board of directors. Services are administered by an expert staff, assisted by on-site law enforcement agents and Children’s Protective Services representatives.

The Center is a private, nonprofit organization funded through a partnership of government and community support and is a fully-accredited member of the National Children’s Alliance. The Center also receives funding from the Michigan Crime Victims Services Commission and Michigan Domestic and Sexual Violence Prevention and Treatment Board. The Center coordinates the efforts of local organizations to stop child sexual abuse and reduce the trauma of victimized children and families.

The Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) is located on the ancestral homelands of the Peoria and Odawa tribes. Throughout time, members of The Council of the Three Fires (Ojibwe, Potawatomi, and Odawa) have also resided there. As part of CAC’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging they wish to honor and preserve the history of these people. CAC makes this land acknowledgment with an understanding that it is one of many steps needed to stand in solidarity with Native nations.

Family & Children Services

Since 1903, Family & Children Services has been the voice of concern and compassion for our communities’ most vulnerable citizens. The Agency’s mission is embraced by their 26-member Board of Directors and staff of 150, who commit every day to being A Source of Hope for those they serve. All services are strength-based and client-centered, supporting individuals and families as they create healthy changes in their lives. Family & Children Services is dedicated to – and known for – best practices in human-service delivery in the community.

The Agency serves clients primarily in Kalamazoo and Calhoun Counties with child welfare services supporting Allegan, Barry, Berrien, Branch, Cass, St. Joseph and Van Buren counties. Agency services are delivered in client’s homes, crisis homes, off-site locations and Agency service sites in Kalamazoo and Battle Creek. The quality of services offered is assured through state and local regulatory bodies, the Council on Accreditation (since 1987) and internal Quality Management functions directed at best practices in delivery of human services. Other committees include Safety, Staff Engagement & Wellness, Trauma and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion.

The Children’s Center

In the late 1920s, children in the Detroit area who were abandoned, abused or alone had little hope or chance of survival. United States Senator James Couzens felt a deep compassion for the plight of these children. In 1929, he helped establish The Children’s Center, one of the first child-guidance clinics in the country.

The Children’s Center is home to many specialized clinical services. The Center leads the way in working with children who struggle with behavioral, emotional, educational, intellectual and developmental challenges or may have experienced trauma. The Center treats the whole child, looking at more than a single issue so they can provide the best, most comprehensive integrated care. The Center examines barriers in the home, school and community, working with the family who raises them and the organizations that support them.

The Center’s vision reflects the Detroit community’s changing needs for providing care and the Center’s evolving position as a leading authority on children’s mental and behavioral health: To champion the never-ending quest for providing the best care, helping children learn to self-advocate once they’re outside the comfort of the Center’s walls, and get them on the road to a happier, more fulfilling childhood.
