Non-HIPAA Security Breach May Require Notification – Are You Prepared?

With the second round of HIPAA audits by Health and Human Services (HHS) ongoing, many employers are focused on HIPAA compliance.  However, HIPAA is not the only law that may require you to notify affected individuals and/or governmental agencies in the event of a data breach involving “personal information.”  A majority of states (including Michigan) have some type of breach notification law that applies in addition to or independently of HIPAA.  Because of the personal information that employers must retain regarding their employees, employers (of all sizes) are frequently the target of cyberattacks.  In fact: 20% of cyberattacks are on employers with less than 250 employees and 87% of those companies do not have a data privacy and security program.

Are you prepared to navigate the myriad of state breach notification laws?  If not, this workshop is a great place to start.  While we will focus on the breach notification requirements under Michigan law, we will also explore ways for your organization to prepare a data and privacy security program that will assist you in responding to breaches that may involve the notification requirements of multiple states.
