An experienced trial and appellate attorney, Andrew Goetz joined Miller Johnson in 2024 and is a Member in the firm’s Detroit office. He focuses his practice on complex litigation and appeals, as well as internal and government investigations.

With his unique combination of government and private-sector experience, Andrew offers strategic direction when clients need it the most. Andrew has argued over 35 appeals—and briefed or supervised many hundreds more—and has handled dispositive briefing or critical motions on some of the most challenging legal issues that clients face. He specializes in navigating lengthy factual records, complex questions of constitutional or statutory interpretation, changes in the law or policy, issues of first impression, and intricate regulatory schemes. His experience in those areas runs the gamut of federal civil and criminal law, including administrative, employment, national security, and constitutional law.

Andrew’s acumen and background allow him to offer clear-eyed advice during all manner of complex litigation and investigations. He knows how to identify and resolve difficult issues early in a matter, reducing litigation risk and resulting in significant cost savings. He advises clients facing enforcement actions or adverse decisions and understands how to preserve issues and structure cases for success down the road. And he is experienced addressing areas in which the law is unsettled or cases or issues presenting a heightened risk of creating bad law or generating adverse publicity.

Before joining Miller Johnson, Andrew practiced for almost 14 years at the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan, where he served as the office’s Appellate Chief and part of the executive team. In that role, he supervised all of the office’s civil and criminal appellate litigation before the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, and he guided the office in resolving many of its most complex or sensitive legal questions. He also served as a Senior Litigation Counsel, partnering with investigative and trial teams, and he litigated and prevailed in a month-long RICO trial before the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.

While previously in private practice at a large international law firm in Washington D.C., Andrew represented financial institutions and other corporate clients on internal investigations, white collar and regulatory defense, and corporate compliance. His practice there covered a range of different subject areas, including alleged accounting and securities fraud, other accusations of malfeasance or whistleblower complaints, and investigations under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

From 2007 to 2008, Andrew served as a law clerk to the Honorable Mary Beck Briscoe on the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit.
