Jake Cowdrey is an Associate in Miller Johnson’s Intellectual Property practice group focusing on patents in mechanical and electrical technologies. He also focuses on technology transactions.

While in engineering school, he worked as an engineering intern in the automotive industry for Continental Automotive (later spun-off as Vitesco Technologies). In this role, he gained experience in all stages of a products lifestyle, including prototyping, validation, and warranty. It was during this time that he became fascinated with IP law, ultimately deciding to attend law school to pursue his passion.

Jake has experience preparing and prosecuting patents in mechanical and electrical technologies, including experience navigating statutory subject matter issues. He has experience working with sprawling families of applications. He has experience conducting freedom to operate and patentability  for new product offerings and features. He has experience counseling clients on how to strategically balance limited resource and maintain patents that have ongoing relevance to their business. He also has experience in the transactional context of developing, using and owning technology and intellectual property (e.g., licensing agreements, service agreements, etc.). He has had the privilege of working with a wide variety of clients, ranging from start-ups and small businesses to large corporations.

Education and Bar and Court Admissions

Jake received his J.D., from the University of Michigan Law School in 2023. He earned his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, magna cum laude, from Oakland University in 2019.

Jake is admitted to practice law in the State of Michigan and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
