Van Stempvoort Honored as an Up & Coming Lawyer by Michigan Lawyers Weekly

Stephen J. van Stempvoort has been recognized by Michigan Lawyers Weekly as an “Up & Coming Lawyer” Class of 2020 for accomplishments in the practice of law.

Mr. van Stempvoort is one of twenty five attorneys selected for this annual program celebrating Michigan lawyers who have established a name for themselves by displaying the ambition, drive and accomplishments that set them apart among their peers – in their first 10 years in practice.

Mr. van Stempvoort’s practice focuses on appellate litigation, with an emphasis on the federal courts. Although his practice spans various aspects of complex commercial litigation, Mr. van Stempvoort has particular expertise in First Amendment law, municipal liability, and new technology issues, including litigation and appeals related to defamation, online speech, discrimination, civil rights, and criminal defense.

In 2020, Mr. van Stempvoort was one of the lead lawyers advising companies regarding compliance with the initial “stay home, stay safe” executive orders in Michigan and other states.  He provided sound legal advice to many clients that allowed them to operate safely and legally within the governing restrictions. As a service to the community, Mr. van Stempvoort provided many free webinars at which he discussed each new version of Michigan’s executive order, answering questions from listeners concerned about the impact of the order on their businesses.

Mr. van Stempvoort was also one of the lead lawyers in successfully challenging certain aspects of one of Michigan’s executive orders that sought to make violations a per se violation of MIOSHA. That section of the executive order was invalidated by the Michigan Court of Claims.

Mr. van Stempvoort took the lead in briefing a significant matter in the Michigan Supreme Court in September. The case involved two certified questions from the United States District Court for the Western District of Michigan relating to the authority of the Governor to issue executive orders under the Emergency Powers of Governor Act and the Emergency Management Act.

Mr. van Stempvoort also acted as trial counsel in the first post-COVID-19 civil jury trial in the United States District Court for the Western District of Michigan. The trial lasted eight days and resulted in a verdict for Mr. van Stempvoort’s client and a judgment over $9.6 million.

Mr. van Stempvoort serves as the co-chair of Miller Johnson’s pro bono committee.

Mr. van Stempvoort was selected by The Best Lawyers in America: Ones to Watch inaugural edition in 2020.

Mr. van Stempvoort earned his J.D. from William and Mary Law School, his M.A. from The Pennsylvania State University, and his B.A. from Calvin College.
