Miller Johnson Welcomes Hillary Scholten and Julia Schall

Miller Johnson welcomes Hillary Scholten and Julia Schall as attorneys joining the firm.

Hillary Scholten joins as Senior Counsel in the firm’s Employment and Labor group, specializing in immigration law. Ms. Scholten will also head up the firm’s Government Affairs practice. An experienced public interest lawyer, and the 2020 Democratic Congressional nominee for Michigan’s 3rd District, Ms. Scholten brings a wide range of legal skills, professional relationships, and policy experience to the firm. Prior to her Congressional run, Ms. Scholten worked as an attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice, and then for a local legal aid organization, the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center, where she defended the legal rights of immigrants and migrant farmworkers in Michigan through community organizing, political advocacy, and federal litigation.

Ms. Scholten was awarded her J.D., cum laude, from the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law in 2011. There she received the Dean’s Award, the Larry B. Shoda Award for academic excellence, and the Marjorie Cook Foundation Scholarship for Women.

While in law school, Ms. Scholten co-authored Penalty and Proportionality in Deportation for Crimes, a scholarly article on immigration consequences of criminal convictions.

Ms. Scholten earned her B.A., cum laude, in Sociology and Social Work from Gordon College in Massachusetts in 2004.

Julia Schall joins as an Associate in the Probate and Estate Planning group, and the Taxation group, practicing out of both the Grand Rapids and Detroit offices. Ms. Schall concentrates her practice in the areas of estate planning, estate and trust administration, family office counseling, and tax law.

Prior to joining Miller Johnson, Ms. Schall was a Manager of Wealth Management Tax for a leading provider of investment advisory, trust, tax, and insurance services in Michigan. She was a Senior Tax Consultant for a Big Four accounting organization working with Michigan-based Fortune 500 companies on audit and corporate taxation matters, worked on several national specialized consulting projects, and was a member of the private client service team serving as an advisor for high net worth family offices and providing complex tax compliance services.

Ms. Schall earned her J.D. from the Michigan State University College of Law in 2012. While in law school, Ms. Schall was a Tax Clinician with the Alvin L. Storrs Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic preparing individual tax returns and negotiating offers in compromise and payment plans with the IRS and State of Michigan.

Ms. Schall received her B.A. in General Business Administration – Pre-Law, with a specialization in International Business from Michigan State University in 2009.
