Miller Johnson Receives Highest Ranking in Annual Chambers High Net Worth Guide

The annual Chambers High Net Worth (HNW) Guide was just released and Miller Johnson’s estate planning group received the highest ranking (Band 1 of 5). Key individual attorneys were also recognized: Robert Brower at Band 1; Christopher Edgar and Lauretta Murphy both at Band 2; and Raj Malviya as the only Michigan attorney recognized for Up and Coming.

Chambers 2017 HNW Guide covers private wealth management work and related specialties in key jurisdictions around the world, featuring in-depth editorial about the leading lawyers and law firms for wealthy individuals and families.

Laurie Murphy chairs the estate planning practice group and commented, “Our group works with private clients—individuals as well as multi-generational families—to preserve their assets, protect their legacies and promote their philanthropic values. We value the trust and respect they place with us. We’re honoured to be included in the HNW Guide for the work we do on behalf of our clients.”

The Chambers 2017 HNW Guide published this:  The trusts and estates team at Miller Jonson advises on wealth and charitable planning for clients, including business owners, single and multi-family offices and families with international interests.

“Miller Johnson is a great firm,” says an interviewee. “They have a pretty good mix of attorneys in their practice who do a variety of work, from complex domestic planning to international planning and litigation as well. I respect working with or against them in various matters because I know that they are coming from a place of integrity working for their clients.”

In addition, these Miller Johnson lawyers are featured:

  • Robert Brower is a litigation lawyer whose practice centers around fiduciary and estate disputes. He regularly works with both trustees and beneficiaries and is lauded as “one of the premier probate litigators of west Michigan.” One peer says: “Bob’s a great guy – he’s difficult to be on the other side from because he’s a very good attorney. He’s very knowledgeable and a great advocate for his clients.” Another explains that “what distinguishes him is that he’s not a pushover, but he’s reasonable. He’ll take a position to protect the issues of his client and resolve matters in a mutually satisfactory way.”
  • Christopher Edgar is recognised as “a very, very good estate planner.” His practice centers around work for the owners of closely held businesses. He handles corporate succession planning, business restructuring and wealth transfer. Many of his clients have significant agricultural interests. A peer says: “Chris is good; I think of him as a technician and he’s a fine lawyer who knows his stuff.”
  • Lauretta Murphy chairs the firm’s trusts and estates group and has a broad-based estate planning practice, covering tax and business succession planning in addition to elder law and disability planning. One peer attests that “Laurie is a very fine lawyer. She’s carved out an area for herself working with families where a family member has a disability, which is a specialised area – I’ve referred to her in that area.” Another says: “She’s a terrific attorney, she has a broad-ranging practice, and she is the primary person in west Michigan for elder law.
  • Raj Malviyais an up-and-coming attorney on the scene in Grand Rapids,” says a peer. “He has a focus on international tax planning, and he’s active in the State Bar. He’s a really bright guy and a good attorney.” He handles estate planning for clients in Michigan and non-residents, including those with assets and business interests in multiple states and internationally. A source describes him as “a very smart guy. He’s very responsive, very on top of everything and he possesses very good technical skills. He’s very good on the international side, such as offshore trust planning and expatriations of US persons.”
