Miller Johnson Moves Into Arena Place

Miller Johnson moved recently from the Calder Plaza Building to Arena Place. The Grand Rapids office at 45 Ottawa Avenue SW opened on May 2 and has 170 attorneys and staff.

When Miller Johnson announced the law firm was moving from the comfort of the city center and close proximity to the courts, the news was monumental, intriguing both the legal and business communities. However, the firm embraced its strategic plan of “daring to be different” as well as becoming “a destination law firm” by moving to the vibrant Arena South district.

“Our clients and the practice of law have become more sophisticated so, it was time to reflect that in our offices.  We incorporated fresh contemporary design and are embracing new technology and efficiencies all while providing the personalized, high-level legal representation our clients have come to expect,” explains Craig Mutch, Miller Johnson Managing Member.

As Arena Place’s anchor tenant, Miller Johnson’s dynamic new space spans the top four floors all with stunning city views.  The firm’s workspace is centered on three floors connected by an interior staircase. Highlights include abundant natural light, furniture designed to energize and encourage productivity, and open areas and collaborative spaces to enhance communication and connection.

Miller Johnson’s eleventh floor reception area welcomes visitors to a full suite of meeting spaces and amenities. Cozy seating and café areas are located at the reception area as well as near the larger conference rooms. The client centered floor hosts a range of rooms designed for private client consultations, mediations, training and workshops, and state-of-the-art videoconferencing.

As the firm’s physical footprint was reduced by roughly 15 percent from its former location, space planning and workflow changes were implemented well in advance.  Space planning involved: increasing the conference rooms from 10 to 18, providing more collaborative spaces for team meetings, and right-sizing offices. New workflow efficiencies were achieved as we worked to reduce paper production and dependency.  For a profession that is historically “paper intense,” the results were amazing.  The client files, as measured in linear feet, were reduced by 62 percent in two years and the library’s physical assets, as measured in stacks, were reduced by 75 percent.

Arena Place is an 11-story state-of-the-art development featuring Class A office space, 100 market rate apartments, ample parking, restaurant/retail experiences, anchor commercial tenants and an attractive rooftop balcony with a truly unique perspective of downtown Grand Rapids. After thoughtful coordination with the City of Grand Rapids’ master plan and the Arena South Visioning Plan, Orion Construction, DGRI and the primary investors created a stunning mixed-use development complete with live/work/play amenities along with housing corporate offices.

Founded in 1959, Miller Johnson is a full-service firm providing legal counsel to businesses and individuals in areas such as business and corporate, employment and labor, litigation, employee benefits, family law, and estate planning.  In November 2015, U.S. News and World Report and Best Lawyers awarded Miller Johnson with tier 1 rankings for 25 practice areas in the Grand Rapids Metro area and eight in Kalamazoo.  For more firm information, visit our company page on LinkedIn.
