Hillary Scholten Joins Miller Johnson as Senior Counsel to Work with Public Sector Clients and Start Government Affairs Group

Miller Johnson is pleased to announce that Hillary Scholten has joined the firm as Senior Counsel and will spearhead the firm’s start up Government Affairs group.

An experienced public interest lawyer, and the 2020 Democratic Congressional nominee for Michigan’s 3rd District, Ms. Scholten brings a wide range of legal skills, professional relationships, and policy experience to the firm.

In the Government Affairs group, Ms. Scholten will focus on helping local governments develop fair and sound policies on a wide range of issues, from employment matters to policing reforms to immigration policies. Ms. Scholten possesses a unique and valuable combination of skills—an expert-level understanding of law and policy and a fresh and extensive knowledge about the most pressing issues facing us here in West Michigan, garnered from hundreds of hours talking to residents on the campaign trail throughout the region.

“As a city resident, the mother of two young children, and a longtime public interest lawyer and public servant, I’ve seen firsthand how the policies we create in our halls of power impact everyday people. It’s my passion to help create policies that are fair, just, and enable all individuals to be safe and to thrive in their communities,” Ms. Scholten said. “Over the past two years on the campaign trail, I’ve spent a lot of time listening to people here in West Michigan, on the right and the left, about what’s working and not working in government, and I’m ready to put that knowledge to work.”

Prior to her Congressional run, Ms. Scholten worked as an attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice, and then for a local legal aid organization, the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center. She will also join Miller Johnson’s Employment and Labor section, specializing in immigration law.

Ms. Scholten was awarded her J.D., cum laude, from the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law in 2011, and her B.A., cum laude, in Sociology and Social Work from Gordon College in Massachusetts in 2004.

Miller Johnson is excited to add Hillary’s skills and experience to our team.
