Gutwald Chosen as Chair of Health Care Law Section for State Bar of Michigan

Timothy C. Gutwald was chosen to serve as the Chair of the Health Care Law Section for the State Bar of Michigan (SBM). He was inducted at the annual meeting on September 29 and will serve a one year term.
There are more than 1,000 members in the health care law section making it one of the largest of the SBM’s 40+ sections. Members include attorneys ranging from private practice to corporate counsel and from sectors including non-profit, government and academia.

Mr. Gutwald represents and counsels health care clients on HIPAA, data breaches, telemedicine, medical staff and peer review matters, licensing issues, risk management, regulatory compliance including Stark and Anti-Kickback analysis and employment matters. His health care clients include hospitals, long term care providers, diagnostic labs, pharmacies, mental health care providers and multi-specialty physician groups. Mr. Gutwald represents health care clients in a wide variety of matters in state and federal courts and in administrative hearings.

Mr. Gutwald is a member of the American Health Lawyers Association and recently co-authored Chapter 22 addressing EMTALA in “Representing Hospitals & Health Systems” just published in 2016. He was named a “Rising Star” in health care law by Michigan Super Lawyers. Mr. Gutwald graduated from Michigan State University College of Law in 2006 and earned his B.A. from Kalamazoo College.

The State Bar of Michigan Health Care Law Section’s mission identifies six undertakings. Among them are “to advocate and serve as an educational resource for members of the State Bar for the purpose of fostering professional development and the advancement of health care law standards”. In addition, members work closely with the health care community on related legislation and public policy and education with regard to legal practices.
