Five Attorneys Selected to Membership at Miller Johnson

Anne Marie Carson, Ryan P. Duffy, Brittany R. Harden, Amy E. Murphy and Stephen J. van Stempvoort were recently elected to Membership at Miller Johnson.  They are all in the Grand Rapids office.

Anne Marie Carson has an active corporate practice focusing on mergers and acquisitions as well as general business services.  Ms. Carson recently completed a four month secondment in the quality and operations legal team of a major medical device and equipment manufacturing company.  In addition, she works with clients from a diverse group of industries as well as private equity groups.  Ms. Carson obtained her J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 2014 and her B.A. from Grand Valley State University in 2009.  She is fluent in French and proficient in each of Spanish and Portuguese.  Ms. Carson is an involved member of the Girls on the Run, March of Dimes and the YWCA of Greater Grand Rapids.

Ryan Duffy, as part of the healthcare reimbursement practice group, provides litigation and counseling to medical providers seeking insurance reimbursement on patient accounts.  He also pursues wrongful denials of hospital claims by third-party payers, including ERISA health plans, no-fault carriers, health insurance plans and government plans.  Mr. Duffy is a graduate of Thomas M. Cooley Law School where he earned his J.D. in 2011 and the United States Naval Academy where he earned his B.A. in 2000.  Prior to practicing law, Mr. Duffy served for nine years in the United States Navy as a pilot and flight instructor.

Brittany Harden concentrates her practice on advising clients in the areas of mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, and general business matters.  Ms. Harden handles matters involving trademark, copyright, and licensing for corporate clients and entrepreneurial start-ups.  She is experienced at navigating and managing the processes involved with ensuring proprietary properties.  She earned her J.D. from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 2012 and received her B.S. from Grand Valley State University in 2009.  Ms. Harden is on the Grand Rapids Opportunities for Women (GROW) Board of Directors and the Grand Rapids Intellectual Property Women (GRIP) steering committee.

Amy Murphy has litigated a variety of civil, criminal, and appellate matters involving claims of breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, theft of trade secrets, violation of noncompetition clauses, product liability, and professional malpractice.  She has represented companies in government investigations.  She graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 2012 and received her B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania in 2009.  Ms. Murphy served as a law clerk to the Honorable Anthony J. Scirica of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and the Honorable Richard D. Bennett of the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland.  She is admitted to practice in Michigan and the District of Columbia.  Ms. Murphy is co-chair of the Young Lawyers Division of the Federal Bar Association’s Western District of Michigan chapter.  She is an active member of the Women’s White Collar Defense Association, serving as the Social Media Coordinator of the association’s Michigan Chapter. In addition, she volunteers for the YWCA of West Central Michigan.

Stephen van Stempvoort focuses on appellate litigation, with an emphasis on the federal courts.  His particular expertise is in First Amendment law, municipal liability, and new technology issues, including litigation and appeals related to defamation, online speech, discrimination, civil rights, and criminal defense.  He serves as the co-chair of Miller Johnson’s pro bono committee.  Mr. van Stempvoort served as a judicial law clerk to the Hon. Richard Allen Griffin of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and also served as a judicial law clerk to the Hon. Glen E. Conrad of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia.  Mr. van Stempvoort earned his J.D. from William and Mary Law School in 2010, his M.A. from The Pennsylvania State University in 2007 and his B.A. from Calvin College in 2004.  He is licensed to practice in Michigan and Pennsylvania.
