Ifti Zaim
Ifti is an intellectual property litigator who primarily directs his practice towards utility and design patent litigation, AIA challenges before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, IP law-related appeals, IP disputes with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and trade secret litigation.
Most recently, Ifti managed, served as Second Chair in the landmark Federal Circuit case of LKQ v. GM, where the Federal Circuit, sitting en banc, delivered a historic and comprehensive victory to Ifti’s client by overruling the long-running Rosen-Durling test for design patent obviousness. In addition to managing the en banc appeal and the two Federal Circuit panel appeals from which the en banc appeal originated, Ifti also managed the numerous AIA challenges that led to those appeals. Prior to that, Ifti’s most notable achievements included co-drafting a petition upon which the PTAB instituted inter partes review of a patent touted by its Fortune 500 owner to be the foundation of a billion-dollar-per-year business, and helping as a member of a team to obtain first-of-its-kind high-stakes expedited emergency injunctive relief against U.S. Customs and Border Protection before the United States Court of International Trade.
Ifti has a proven talent for quickly becoming fluent in virtually all types of technical and design subject areas. He has worked with technical subject matter spanning myriad technology areas, including:
- media servers,
- self-balancing transporter devices,
- enterprise servers and databases,
- automotive design and parts,
- vehicle telematics and diagnostics devices,
- vision science and related telemedicine,
- polymer chemistry, and
- dental healthcare products
Ifti also devotes time to pro bono work, helping artists, authors, and entertainers navigate challenging intellectual property quandaries and copyright, trademark, and licensing disputes.
Professional Affiliations, Activities, and Honors
Ifti is a member of the AIPLA and is active in a number of its committees, including the Patent Litigation committee and its Damages subcommittee and the PTAB Trials committee.

Ifti is a frequent speaker on patent and other intellectual property litigation to legal professional organizations and various organizations in the arts and entertainment space. He most recently published a paper through the AIPLA regarding recent developments the use of experts in IP litigation and contributed to the AIPLA’s 2024 Damages Year in Review paper and presentation. He also regularly writes on newsworthy developments in intellectual property law, and one of his articles was featured in the March/April issue of IP Litigator, a Wolters Kluwer publication.
