Why Miller Johnson?

As you are making critical decisions about your future, learn more about the diverse opportunities we can offer for you to pursue your areas of interest:

Summer Associate Program

As a summer associate at Miller Johnson, you are a potential future associate.  We prefer to recruit our new associates from our summer associate program.  We historically hire fewer “summers” than other large West Michigan law firms.

Our program gives you a real taste of the work life of a Miller Johnson associate.  By limiting the number of summer associates, we allow you to get a fuller experience and eliminate competition for offers of associate employment.

On The Job

If you have a particular interest in certain practice areas, more assignments will come in those areas. But our goal is to have you work with a variety of attorneys in a variety of practice areas in the summer. Assignments are given directly by attorneys. You will receive, complete, and deliver assignments as associates do; we feel this makes your overall experience more valuable.

Evaluations & Feedback

Assigning attorneys evaluate each project in writing. We review these evaluations with you and provide mid- and end-of-summer evaluations.

Each summer associate has two “mentors” — a member and an associate. Your mentors will help ensure that you have a rewarding experience by keeping tabs on many issues such as:

  • Do you have enough — but not too much — work?
  • Are you working with many people?
  • Are you doing interesting work of the type you want to have?
  • Are you receiving prompt and helpful feedback?
  • Are you getting out of the office?
  • Are there any concerns?

Non-Research Activities

An attorney’s work does not revolve around library research, so we make sure that you get to participate in other legal activities including closings, negotiations, depositions and client meetings.

Compensation and Benefits

Salaries are competitive with West Michigan law firms and perks include parking and athletic club memberships.

Off The Clock

Social Activities

Miller Johnson offers many social activities during the summer, many based on summer associate suggestions. Typical activities include social gatherings at attorneys’ homes, the firm family picnic and sporting events (both observing and participating, as you wish).

The West Michigan area offers many housing options, including apartments, condominiums, and duplexes. You can find these not only in the downtown area, but also in nearby suburbs and rural areas. We help summer associates locate housing.
